Patient Instructions for Plastic Surgery (Cosmetic or Reconstructive)
Before Your Procedure
No eating or drinking after midnight before your surgery (including gum or mints). This is crucial for your safety under anesthesia.
Stop blood-thinning medications (aspirin, ibuprofen, certain supplements like fish oil or vitamin E) as advised, usually 5–7 days in advance.
No smoking at least 2–4 weeks before and after surgery. It significantly affects healing and increases complication risks.
Wear loose clothing and avoid makeup, jewelry, or nail polish on surgery day.
After Your Procedure
You'll likely feel sore, tight, or swollen. Swelling peaks around day 3-5.
Follow wound care instructions precisely; leave dressings in place unless your surgeon tells you otherwise.
Use cold compresses or compression garments (if prescribed) to reduce swelling.
Avoid heavy lifting, bending over, or straining for at least 2 weeks, depending on the procedure.
