Patient Instructions for Gastrointestinal Surgeries

Before Your Procedure

Expect pre-surgery bloodwork and possibly imaging.

No food or drink 8–12 hours before surgery.

Discuss your full medication list. You might need to stop certain drugs like aspirin or diabetes meds.

After Your Procedure

You'll start on clear liquids, then advance to soft foods as your body adjusts.

It's normal to feel tired and sore — take pain meds as prescribed and rest.

Get up and walk as soon as you're able. It helps bowel function return.
