Patient Instructions for Colonoscopies
Before Your Procedure
Two days prior, your doctor will start you on a clear liquid diet (think broth, Jell-O, tea, no red / purple dye).
You'll drink a "bowel prep" solution to create frequent diarrhea and clean your colon.
Stay near a bathroom.
No eating or drinking after midnight the night before your procedure.
You must have someone with you at discharge. You can't drive yourself home due to sedation.
After Your Procedure
You'll likely feel groggy and sore. That's normal. Your care team will manage pain and help you ease back into movement.
Look at your incision daily. It's okay for it to be a little red or swollen at first, but call if you see any fluid or the wound opens up.
